Welcome to Pre-Algebra and Algebra 1 on Team Douglass. I'm looking forward to the start of a new school year and a fresh group of smiling faces!  I’m excited to have the opportunity to work with you this year as I hope to share my enthusiasm for math with you through hands-on activities, group work, manipulatives, and discussions.  The focus is to build on students’ concrete reasoning experiences by developing deep mathematical understanding required for success in abstract learning experiences and in solving real-life problems. Let's have a great year in math!

Pre-Algebra Course Description

The eighth-grade standards contain both content that reviews or extends concepts and skills learned in previous grades and new content that prepares students for more abstract concepts in algebra and geometry.  Students will gain proficiency in computation with rational numbers and will use proportions to solve a variety of problems.  New concepts include solving two-step equations and inequalities, graphing linear equations, visualizing three-dimensional shapes represented in two-dimensional drawings, applying transformations to geometric shapes in the coordinate plane, and using matrices to organize and interpret data.  Students will verify and apply Pythagorean Theorem and represent relations and functions using tables, graphs, and rules.

Algebra 1 and Pre-AP Algebra 1 Course Description

Algebra I provides a systematic way to represent mathematical relationships and analyze change.  Students need to understand the concepts and symbols of algebra, the structures that govern the manipulation of the symbols, and how the symbols can be used to record ideas and events.  Students will explore patterns that are linear and quadratic in the first year of algebra and should develop the notion of families and functions.  A solid conceptual foundation in algebra should be developed before students engage extensively in symbolic manipulation.
