The Mission of Ronald Wilson Reagan Middle School
Credo: “Learn, Achieve, Succeed, Contribute”
Vision Statement: Ensuring high-level learning, achievement, and integrity for every student through quality classroom instruction, authentic literacy, and academic and behavior support.
Mission Summary: Ronald Wilson Reagan Middle School's credo, "Learn, Achieve,Succeed, Contribute" expresses our belief that a school must partner with parents and the community to give students the skills and knowledge they need to be successful and the integrity and discipline to use them ethically. The RRMS staff will strive to realize this vision through four clear areas of focus:
1) Classroom Instruction
Every RRMS teacher will be a member of a team using its combined knowledge and skills with the Virginia and Prince William County Schools' curricula to identify the most important things that students must know and apply in each content area. Teams will work together to create long- and short-term learning goals that they regularly evaluate and adjust using student test results and work samples. Each RRMS teacher makes sure that lessons are designed to help students achieve goals by providing opportunities for repeated cycles of demonstration, practice (structured, guided, and independent), assessment, and feedback.
Grade-level team members will communicate and partner with parents to identify and address specific academic, social, and emotional student needs and issues as they arise throughout the school year.
2) Authentic Literacy
All RRMS staff members are committed to ensuring that every student demonstrates skill mastery through high-level reading, writing, and expression across every content area. Teachers of all subjects will use common reading, writing, and speaking strategies, standards, and tasks when working with students. The entire school will engage in sustained silent reading at least twice each week. The RRMS literacy committee will solicit the input of parents on the effectiveness of the school’s reading, writing, and speaking strategies and standards.
3) Academic Support
RRMS staff members will arrange time during the school day and after hours for students who would benefit from help outside of their regular classes to master knowledge and skills. These determinations will be made on a case by case basis using reliable evidence of the strengths and struggles for each child. Teachers will engage in regular communication and dialogue with the parents of struggling students(students receiving an overall grade of “D” or “F” or a drop in the overall academic mark of two letter grades or more).
4) Behavior Support
RRMS will dedicate time during the school day on a weekly basis to teaching and reinforcing expectations for ethical behavior. School counselors will support positive behavior through classroom visits,small-group and individual counseling, and the institution of student leadership opportunities within the school. RRMS will sponsor and encourage active participation in clubs, organizations, and activities that give students opportunities to serve their community and build school identity and pride.
Students who exceed standards for ethical behavior will receive incentives in the form of commendations and public recognition. School staff members will promptly address student failure to meet behavioral expectations logically and constructively with an eye toward helping students make better choices in the future. Administrators will utilize alternatives to school suspension in the form of after-hours seminars and school service whenever such alternatives are reasonable and feasible. All school staff members will partner with parents to encourage positive student decision making and constructively address behavior issues.
By maintaining a steady commitment to this vision and mission, the RRMS staff will strive to ensure that students develop the skills and the character that will allow them to succeed through both achievement and contribution. These are the principles that are captured in the RRMS vision statement:
"Ensuring high-level learning, achievement, and integrity for every student through quality classroom instruction, authentic literacy, and academic and behavior support."
