7th Grade Language Arts

Course Description:

Every lesson and assignment connect to the following standards:

Vocabulary - Reading - Writing  -  Media Literacy & Communication.

We will focus on standards-based grading which means each grade in the gradebook will directly reflect the student’s mastery of a specific skill. Students will gain insight and reach mastery by participating in a variety of authentic literacy activities, enjoying rich book club selections and exploring our Scholastic text Expert 21. Students will complete each unit feeling confident in their abilities to demonstrate and discuss their mastery level skills.

This course emphasizes the fundamental language skills of reading, writing, speaking, listening, thinking, viewing, and presenting. The course includes studies of various literary genres: short story, poetry, novel, research, and nonfiction. Students are expected to participate in Word Study to enhance vocabulary and etymology skills. Composition will be an ongoing part of this course, and students will hone the persuasive, narrative, and expository writing styles.

Some books we will be reading this year are:

The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton
Refugee by Alan Gratz
Red Scarf Girl by Ji-Li Jiang
